Tomorrow's Memorial Day

Well it's been quite some time since I posted to this blog. I plan on doing it again quite soon as I plan on using feeds from here and my other blogs to feed a personal page I plan on creating soon.

Since tomorrow is Memorial Day here in the United States of America I thought that I would take this time to say Happy Memorial Day. Don S. Davis dies

This news is a few days old as it happened on June 29, 2008, but it still bears posting in my opinion. This post is in remembrance to an actor who I think should have gained more celebrity status then he did. His name is Don S. Davis, and for any of you familar with Stargate SG-1 enough to be called a fan of the show or a regular viewer he played the part of Maj. General George Hammond. He appeared in many more TV shows and films.

I will always remember his character and his leadership of that fictional but heroic team of individuals. According to

Although this 2008 Independence Day is less than four hours to a close here in Lincoln NE, I thought that I'd make a short blog post just to tell my USA readers Happy Independence Day. I wish you and your loved ones a safe and enjoyable evening and I hope you had fun celebrating today.

Facebook is better than MySpace

In my opinion Facebook is better than MySpace. No it might not be as flashy but you are able to get your messages seen a lot more often than with MySpace. If you choose to disagree with me that's fine. By the way, I am posting this blog post using an application called BlogIt that works through Facebook.

I quit my job

I quit my job. Well sort of anyway. I went from being a full time employee at the local state hospital to being an on call employee. This is to make more time to see my mother each month as she lives out of state. Also I want to put more time into both my Internet marketing business and my writing career. These tasks include adding to this blog on a more regular basis.

Battlestar Galactica and the Final Five

As some of you may know and others may not, I am a big follower of science fiction both in television and movies. One of my favorite television shows is the new version of Battlestar Galactica which is in its final season.

For any of you who have followed this sci-fi tv series and know that certain characters are being revealed as four of the cylons. Do you believe possibly that this is an attempt to fool viewers into believing that these characters are part of the final five? If this is the case then the true final five cylons will be revealed closer to the end of the series. Are there any other Battlestar Galactica fans out there that conjecture that this may be a possibility?

As I was turning into the entrance of the 33rd and Cornhusker U Stop Today I saw a gentleman in casual attire standing by the entrance smoking a cigarette. I pulled up to the gas pump and saw him walk over to a van that read Your Respiratory Specialists as the byline underneath the company name.

It struck me as ironic that someone working for a company that touted itself as being respiratory specialists would smoke. I don't know if this could be considered hypocritical but definitely this employee may one day need the company's services.

Nebraska Child Support System Injustice

I have a close friend whom in this post I will refer to only as L in order to protect his identity. L is in his late twenties. He has had a series of unfortunate incidences over the last few years. These have all affected his ability to pay child support in a timely manner.

Now I am not against child support and I do believe that some people deliberately try to get out of paying it. But does an accident and an illness qualify as a deliberate attempt to get out of paying child support? In my opinion it does not!!! Indeed the judge in this case is way out of line in not taking these things into consideration when putting L on what is know as the purge plan. The purge plan is a program for people who have fallen behind in their child support. L was without work for several months because he was assaulted by a stranger at a party and lost the sight in his right eye. Because of this he lost his job as a drywaller and framer and was unable to pay child support for several months. Because he got behind he was put on the purge plan. The purge plan raised the amount he had to pay from $365 a month to $415. This, mind you is for one child.

Several years before this, after the birth of his daughter L developed a type of cancer that affects about one in every few hundred young males. He had to go through about three months of painful chemotherapy. His wife divorced him.

Skip ahead to this year. The cancer returned, surgery was performed even though there is no way to pay the close to $10,000 in medical bills. L lost his job despite doctors notes about the appointment. He has found a new job immediately but just like the old one the $415 in child support is almost half of his monthly income leaving the other half for rent and utilities only, not including food and other monthly expenses such as the testosterone he must take every two weeks, plus special prescription eye drops for his damaged eye.

If he misses one month of the purge plan he goes to jail for three months. Personally I think he should try for disability again. If there are any lawyers out here in Nebraska that would handle this case inexpensively so that L could get this $415 reduced to at least half I would appreciate you contacting me through posting on this blog.

L did not ask for the misfortune of the accident or the illness and it does affect his ability to make money as he is sick several times per month.

Gregory Gaines Memories

I picked up the local section of the Lincoln Journal Star and discovered in the obituary section the obituary of my old boss at Best Buy from 1997-2008. Gregory Gaines whom we all called Greg was the manager of the merchandising department at Best Buy during the time I worked there. Although I hadn't seen Greg in years he will not be forgotten.

Although there were times of disagreement Greg was overall a great guy in my opinion. His sense of humor and love for corny jokes will always be in my memory. If any of you are familiar with the alcoholic beverage a Grasshopper, then you will appreciate this joke he once told. "A grasshopper walked into a bar and asked the bartender for a drink. The bartender replied 'We've got a drink named after you.' The grasshopper replied 'You've got a drink named Floyd!"

Such humor was Greg's way of getting the day off to a good start. To all of Greg's family and close friends I am sure you will miss him greatly. May those good memories be often. Greg, may you rest in peace.

I've been away from posting to this blog because I am working on a major project concerning the city of Lincoln Nebraska and developing local business and personal contacts. I won't say anything more here in this post except that the project should launch in its entirety in June of 2006.

Academy Awards thoughts and more

I was disappointed in last nights Academy Awards ceremony, but not so much in the movies that were chosen and that won certain awards but more in fact by the lackluster performance of Jon Stewart of The Daily Show. The awards did make me want to at some time soon watch the movie Crash which won an Oscar for best picture.

Although, I haven't seen it yet King Kong won several awards as did the Chronicles of Narnia movie, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The rap group Three 6 Mafia won an award for the use of their song "It's Hard Out Here for A Pimp", which was more than a little on the adult side for a program that should be family oriented. The song was used in a movie I probably won't ever take the time to watch, titled "Hustle and Flow." I wonder how many parents had to explain to their children what a pimp was as well as explaining certain things about sexuality.

The most meaningful part of the awards ceremony for me was when they presented a tribute to the stars and directors who passed on during the 2005. These included people forever in my memory such as Eddie Albert, Shirley Winters and Anne Bancroft.

The second most meaningful part of the awards ceremont for me was when director Robert Altman getting an Honorary Oscar and his films such as MASH, Shortcuts, The Player and several others that he has done over the last several decades.

Disappointment in the choice of host for the awards didn't completely ruin the Oscars for me though as I do think they presented some great movies as nominees and winners of the Academy Awards. Who knows, maybe someday they will be giving Oscars for the best blog entry for a movie the previous year. But then again, probably not.

Dick Cheney cleared of wrongdoing

Kenedy County Sheriff Ramon Salinas said an investigation had determined Cheney shot Texas lawyer Harry Whittington by accident, therefore no legal action was needed.

"No charges will be filed against anybody, and that's it," Salinas told reporters in brief comments outside his office in the town of Sarita, south of Corpus Christi.

My question is this. Was Mr. Cheney drunk? Was Harry Whittington one of Cheney's business partners? Or is there something else going on here?

Even though no charges will be filed I think Dick Cheney is guilty of being clumsy and should be labeled as a recklesslly clumsy and it should be made public record for historys sake. Nuff said.

An Old Friend Is Gone - how true!

Dear Keith,

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by three stepbrothers;

I Know My Rights,
Someone Else Is To Blame
and I'm A Victim.

I recently made a major change to my blog Opportunity Assistance to being published with WordPress rather than with Blogger. Although, I like the format of WordPress a great deal more and the fact that I can add stuff to categories, I still as of yet to see my posts show up at my Technorati listing for Opportunity Assistance. Green Glow In The Dark Pigs In The News

Are there green Glow-in-the-dark pigs supposedly made in Taiwan? That's what this news release says. This weird news story was just released recently by the BBC and the entire story can be seen at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4605202.stm

According to scientists in Taiwan they say they have bred three fluorescent "transgenic green pigs that glow in the dark." They have supposedly done this by adding genetic material from jellyfish into a normal pig embryo while doing research at National Taiwan University. I haven't heard this before but according to the report scientists have bred partially fluorescent pigs before but these pigs have a difference, that being even their internal organs are green.

These transgenic pigs will purportedly be used to study human disease since with their genetic material being green it will be easy to spot when injected into another animal. Scientists will be able to track the cells without the need for a biopsy or other invasive procedures.

Mouse Ablaze - A Case of Poetic Justice?

Whether you are a believer in Karma or other forms of worldly punishment for "so called sins" this occurence of such "justice" seems a bit extreme to say the least.

In Fort Sumner, New Mexico 81 year old Luciano Mares, threw a mouse he had found in his home into the fire and what happened next is one of those things you only think you see in the movies or read about in books. To Mares disbelief and horror the mouse, aflame from the fire, ran into Luciano's house, catching the house on fire and completely destroying it. Luckily no one was injured.

What can be learned from this:

Don't throw live animals into fires. It's cruel and inhumane. As unfortunate and tragic as this there's a lesson to be learned here. Play with fire and you will get burned. For a current link to this story visit here.

A fish with two mouths

I don't have the paper in front of me that I read this in, but I read in the Lincoln Journal Star about a man catching a fish that had two mouths. It was a trout and it was caught in Holmes Lake in Lincoln, Nebraska. An odd place for a trout, but rumors of the pollution in this lake have led to many stories about mutant fish. Now we have proof.

Richard Pryor

Another comedian is gone. Richard Pryor born on December 1, 1940 died December 10, 2005 at the age of 65. Although I was never a big fan because his comedy was a bit vulgar at times in my opinion I did enjoy The Toy and Silver Streak.

Pryor died of cardiac arrest at the age of 65 in an Encino hospital at 8 a.m. on December 10, 2005. He was brought to the hospital after his wife's attempts to resuscitate him failed. His wife was quoted as saying that "at the end there was a smile on his face.

Bank of the West

I had a checking account with Commercial Federal. They were bought out by Bank of the West. Now I can't access my online banking even after making two calls to customer service and one visit to my bank. I need to be able to see my account online so that I know where I am financially in my day to day business. I am very unimpressed and disappointed by Bank of the West. Maybe I will write the editor of my local newspaper so that they can't print my dissatisfaction in the editorial column of their newspaper, the Lincoln Journal Star.

Lincoln Nebraska weather report

I have been remiss in posting to this blog but I have been very busy with several projects that have eaten away at my time.

Here in Lincoln, Nebraska it's cold outside and I dread going out. It is currently 11 degrees Fahrenheit at 10:41 AM. It is supposed to warm up today and we may actually see 40 degrees tomorrow on Saturday, December 10th after days of lows between 5 below and 10 degrees.

I think the warm temperatures will only be a lull in what I feel is both going to be a cold and snowy winter season for all of our northern US states.

I guess I will just think warm thoughts as I prepare to go to work this afternoon at my temp job as a psychiatric technician.

Hurricane Rita - Is more devastation coming?

What is up with our weather?

Is this the result of global warming or a much higher power? Or is just circumstance? Whatever the case if I lived on any coastal area that was affected by hurricanes I would consider packing my bags and moving right about now.

The evacuees who are in certain Texas coastal cities are being told to move again as the new Hurricane Katrina is being upgraded as it moves west along the gulf coast area. Surely these victims of Hurricane Katrina may feel as they are being chased by the weather and the forces controlling it.

Save on gas and donate to reputable charities

In an effort to help people during this time of need we have to realize the effect that Hurricane Katrina has caused upon the U.S. economy especially upon gasoline prices. To that effect I have published the article 10 Tips for Using Less Gas and Saving More Money by Danek Kaus on my website Opportunity Assistance Business Resource Center. While although not an article about business per se the article is about saving money and during times of crisis such things affect both business and personal lives.

On another front if you can donate time or money or anything else of need to the relief efforts please be careful about who you give your money to as there are a lot of scams coming out of this crisis. Bob Denver an American Icon

As generations of tv viewers grew up with Bob Denver as Gilligan many including myself will miss him. His Gilligan character was the ultimate klutz and a world class goof but yet he was always the good guy; the person who despite all of his faults everyone still cared about.

I grew up watching television as a child in an Iowa farm community and one of the shows that I watched often was Gilligan's Island. This was during the 60's and I have fond memories of Ginger, Mary Ann, Gilligan, the Professor and the rest of the castaways. His castmates preceeding him in death include Alan Hale (the Skipper), Jim Bachus (the Millionairre), Natalie Schafer (the Millionairre's wife).

In real life he leaves behind his wife Dreama, and children Patrick, Megan, Emily and Colin. Denver was 70 years old and receiving treatment for cancer at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina where he passed away September 6, 2005.

Bob, you will always live on in our memories and in the reruns of Gilligan's Island and other tv classics. Rest in peace.

At the Astrodome in Houston while making the rounds with her husband ex-president Bush, Barbara Bush our current presidents mother showed some of her true colors.Okay, although George Bush has often put his foot in his mouth and said stuff that either meant the opposite of what he meant to say or was just plain gibberish his mother Barbara Bush showed her true colors of being an aristocrat. While her husband ex president George H.W. Bush and ex president Bill Clinton received smiles, hugs and accolades Barbara received criticism for her statement: "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

So is Barbara Bush saying that since the refugees housed in the Astrodome are poor that they don't deserve more than being housed there? Squallor to squallor? It is possible she was meaning it differently but one should say what they mean.

Hello!!! These people are separated from loved ones, possessions and keepsakes, family pets that mean as much to them as family and you Mrs. Bush senior make such a statement as the one in this post. I think that an explanation and or an apology are in order. But then again maybe you'd stick your foot in your mouth. Shame on you.

George Bush what do you think of him?

I voted for George Bush and I stand by my decision on doing so although I don't always agree with the way he handles everything. In light of the recent disaster in New Orleans I think possibly the government especially FEMA could have acted much quicker than they did. However, is it the president's fault that they didn't? When disaster happens stress occurs and I am sure that our president is feeling it. I do believe that Mr. Bush is a man of his word.

He may not always appear as the most intelligent person in light of public image, however for all of the decisions he must make on many fronts he must be given recognition for not losing his composure like some other public officials whom are looked to in this time of desperation.

For our country especially New Orleans and the rest of Louisiana, and those parts of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi devastated by Katrina I urge you to keep your prayers and if possible donations coming. Only working together can we get our brothers and sisters through this tragedy. I welcome your comments on everything I have said here.

Although I am not up to organizing any type of relief effort myself for the victims of Hurricane Katrina I have come across several web site addresses at which you can donate and one in particular for you to get Red Cross banners to put on your web pages if you have any web sites that you administer.

My name is Keith P. Stieneke. I am 46 years old, single and a Christian. My work includes being a network marketer, affiliate marketer, a data extractor (a subcontracting position) and an on call psychiatric technician.

It seems like I am always creating a new blog. The reason I do this is that each one is for a specific purpose. The Hurricane Aftermath

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina may be one of the largest natural disasters in recent US history even more so than than the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. According to the mayor of New Orleans it is quite possible there are thousands dead with bodies floating in the flood waters and hidden out of site in other places where the victims were trapped. Although a grim and dark week for our southern United States it may have been worse as Katrina was downgraded from a category 5 to a category 4 hurricane from what I understand.

My prayers go out to everyone who has been displaced by this disaster and also those who have lost loved ones. In addition my heart goes out to those who have no idea what have happened to family members and friends. I ask your prayers for these people.

If you know of relief efforts that need volunteers please leave comments to that effect.
